Roxbury’s 7-member Council acts as a body rather than individually. The Council’s responsibilities are laid out in the township charter. The Council works with the township manager, the various departments and offices, as well as the boards and commission.
The Council is responsible for:
- Dealing with the administrative service and employees through the township manager
- Appointing boards, committees and commissions
- Continuing, creating, determining and/or defining the powers and duties of the executive and administrative departments, boards and offices as considered necessary to properly and efficiently operate Roxbury
- Meeting annually for organization (appointing the mayor and deputy mayor among their members) on any day during the first week in January
- Meeting regularly – the meetings are currently set for the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month
- Present and act upon ordinances and resolutions, which are presented by a member of the council or the manager
Additionally, the mayor has specific responsibilities as well.
- The mayor shall preside at all meetings of the council and shall have a voice and vote in its proceedings
- All bonds, notes, contracts and written obligations of the municipality shall be executed on its behalf by the mayor
- The deputy mayor shall act in place of the mayor in the case of the mayor’s absence or disability
Unofficially, the mayor and other members of Council attend events throughout Roxbury, often by invitation. Scouting awards, ribbon cutting ceremonies, and memorial events are some examples.
